Overview

Issues & Campaigns

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades is recognized throughout North America for its dedication to activism to further the issues, campaigns and causes we believe in for our communities and the labor movement.

The fight for fair wages, benefits and the right to organize is an everyday struggle in North America. Members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades are mobilizing to rally fellow workers to have their voice heard in the workplace, and to elect the candidates who will fight for us on Capitol Hill and Parliament Hill.

The time each of us puts into supporting candidates and initiatives for the advancement of our proud cause can have a profound effect on not only our lives, but the lives of all working families – union and non-union.

Join the IUPAT in our pursuit to better the lives of working families and provide more opportunities for all.

Build Together: Women of the Building Trades

IUPAT Canada recognizes the pressing need for female inclusion and recruitment into the building trades. Build Together: Women of the Building Trades focuses upon meeting those needs so we can continue to move our organization forward.

The Build Together Program was created by tradeswomen for the purpose of changing and advancing the culture of the construction industry. For too long, our industry has had unfortunate barriers such as gender discrimination, wage inequality and lack of awareness for opportunities and careers in the trades which further prevent and/or discourage women from joining the building trades. That is why the Build Together program has tailored strategies to actively recruit & retain women to the industry. Multiple chapters of Build Together: Women of the Building Trades have been established throughout Canada’s provinces to recruit more women into our industry. Each chapter takes an active role in organizing women in their communities, regularly holding local events for recruiting new workers and providing mentors for those workers

Lean In Circles for Union Tradeswomen

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Canada has been organizing and empowering tradespeople for over a century. One of the reasons for our union’s longevity within the construction industry is our commitment to organizing workers from all communities and backgrounds. We’re staunch advocates for equal opportunity, inclusivity and diversity in the building trades and all other employment sectors, public and private.

Unfortunately, women remain an underrepresented demographic. While there are indeed more women in the building trades now than there were decades ago, there remains an abundance of work to do in order to recruit, retain and protect our union sisters. Lean In Circles for Union Tradeswomen serves as a virtual/in-person peer networking and mentoring program created by women, for women. In a world where women still face bias and other barriers at work, Circles are a safe space for women to share their struggles, give and get advice, and celebrate each other’s victories. Whether you need help navigating your new normal at work or are looking for support from women who understand what you’re going through, your Union Tradeswomen Circle will give you the boost we all need to take on 2021 and beyond. Over 50,000 circles have been created by women in over 184 countries. Circles typically convene on a monthly basis via Zoom conferencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These circles are tight-knit groups made up of friends, co-workers and members of your communities. Free meeting guides and resources are provided to prompt group discussion and help women learn new skills together. Every meeting closes by committing to One Action—one thing you’ll do to step outside your comfort zone or learn a new skill before your next meeting.
